The Scurvy Dog – Providence, RI

Scurvy is a result of not having enough vitamin C in your diet, something that was a major bummer amongst sailors in the 1700s, but it’s rare today. If you frequent The Scurvy Dog in Providence, Rhode Island you surely won’t contract the disease, especially if you drink one of their signature cocktails that contain fruit juice.

This dive bar is built on rock and roll and heavily influenced by punk, rock, and heavy metal. The only rule: there is no pop and no rap. A normal night at The Scurvy Dog might include tunes from Devo, Slayer, AC/DC, Alice Cooper, and Metallica.

You might also hear some Green Day once in a while because the bar’s owner is Terry Linehan, a former member of the band. If you see him at The Scurvy Dog, be warned: he does not like to talk about himself or the band.

Good times had by questionable characters could be this place’s motto. Just check out these reviews!

“You will never find a more wretched hive of crazies and villainy scum.”

“The bouncers are nice, but I wouldn’t take one home.”

“The place is relatively douche bag free!”

“It’s not exclusively occupied by middle-age folks bereft of all hopes and dreams, but college kids call it a dive bar.”

“It’s dark and dingy, and they like it that way.”

The Scurvy Dog also sports a popular Dog Eat Dog menu. Hot dogs are a perfect cuisine for any dive bar because you can eat them without setting down your drink. Try their Wiggety Waaah (with Nutella, bacon and swiss cheese), The Red-Light District (with swiss and raspberry jam), or the Brie ‘Cuz You’ll Love It (brie, green apple, bacon bits, and honey). For those who aren’t hot dog fans, they also have chili and chips, and everything is reasonably priced (all dogs are $6 each).

The interior of this bar is pretty simple—everything is red or black, from the ceiling to the floor. There are very cool concert posters covering the walls and a pool table that can be used every night until 10 p.m. They also have a backyard area where many people bring their dogs under the direction of Rocket, the house mutt.

The Scurvy Dog is a drunk-friendly spot, with 20 beers on tap and 45 in bottles, There are 20 types of tequila that range from El Cheapo to El Magnifico, with a full arsenal of vodkas, whiskies, and other distilled spirits. The prices are fair, so they don’t often feature drink specials. Their parking lot is large, and the staff is cool with your vehicle staying overnight if you get too snockered.

If you have an awesome night at The Scurvy Dog and want to remember it the next day, you might want to acquire a t-shirt or a hat from the place. They have hoodies, lady’s t-shirts, guy’s shirts, and more. One of the shirts has a nice message on the back that says: “Keeping Providence Drunk One Punk at a Time.”

So if you’re in Providence any time soon, have a dog and pet a dog and then bark at the moon while lifting your leg to the world at The Scurvy Dog!
