The Silver Bullet – Paducah, KY

It’s great to get all the recommendations of the local and favorite dives of the people that have been following our page.    Elizabeth wrote to The Dive Bar Tourist about her favorite local dive, The Silver Bullet in Paducah, Kentucky, we were intrigued.  Elizabeth says, ” It’s basically an institution in Paducah. What I love about it is the diversity of people there. You might sit on the bar stool and have a homeless man to your left and a city councilwoman to your right. All different ages, social groups, races and groups of people.” In the humble opinion of The Dive Bar Tourist, diversity is one of the best and most enjoyable aspects of visiting dives!  After all, where else can you rub elbows and make friends, and find common ground with everyone,  regardless of their station in life outside the doors of the bar?

This dive has been around for over twenty years, and is pretty straightforward by dive bar standards.  It is dimly lit, with a pool table, and a juke box (which happens to have an impressively diverse selection).  There’s not much in the way of decor:  just your requisite neon beer signs, holiday lights that never seem to get taken down, wood paneling, exposed brick, and an old wagon wheel hanging over the bar.

And then there’s the karaoke machine, with its extensive song selection. Every Friday and Saturday night, from 9pm-1am, “Silver Bullet Karaoke Shenanigans” gets underway. Man oh man, does this place take its karaoke nights seriously.  As the night rolls along, this crowd gets more and more…well, let’s just call it enthusiastic.  The regulars here are known to be a colorful cast of characters who like to live it up. As Elizabeth says, “There is nothing more entertaining than drunk karaoke.”  And if the crowd gets a little too rowdy, long-time Silver Bullet bartender Teresa suffers no fools, and can calm them down.  If you find yourself there on a quieter night, there are checker boards available to play, with red and blue bottle caps taking the place of the actual checkers.

As for the adult beverages, Elizabeth says “Booze is cheap and basic, but always great.” If you’re looking for pricey top shelf liquors, you’re going to have to look elsewhere.  But if you want a nice cold beer at a great price, you’re going to like it here a whole lot.   Remember to bring cash- they don’t accept credit cards.
